Worse than that? Really?

Today is Tuesday and I usually spend some time in the car while I drive Ellie to preschool. I love to listen to the radio, I love hearing new songs and different kinds of music. I have never been a big CD collector. I like the radio... But the one thing that can get annoying about the radio are DJ's and commercials. They do get old. Today I heard a commercial that really surprised me...
It was one of those truth about Tobacco adds, the ones that give away brochures that teach parents how to tell their kids not to smoke. This concept blows my mind because, really, how hard is it to tell your kids, "Smoking is really bad for you, it will kill you, DO NOT smoke or there will be consequences." That seems pretty easy to me but I guess thousands of parents find it hard to talk to their kids, especially about smoking... So hard, in fact, that they would rather stick their hand in a fire or cuddle up with a rabid skunk! (That's what the commercial said, I didn't come up with that on my own!)
I appreciate that there is someone out there trying to help these parents because it sounds like they need it...
But as for me and my family- my poor kids get too much information from me all the time. I like it that way. I like to be the one to bring up the hard subjects and teach them to my kids before anybody else does. Just ask my kids what they think about smoking, they will be happy to tell you. (But you will have to ask them because I have also had a talk with them about being polite, even to people who have bad habits!)
I want my kids to always come to me for answers, and lucky for me, I have my beliefs and I don't need a pamphlet...
But if you'd rather cuddle up with a rabid skunk than talk to your kid please do more than just order a pamphlet!

  1. Good for you! I talk to my kids too, I just hope they are listening. It amazes me that there are people who have kids and won't talk to them, especially about the important stuff.

  2. Kids are so funny. We've had many talks over the years with our kids and you think they are listening and get it and then one day they say something and you look at them and go, "Huh? We talked about that remember? Remember? That birds and bees thing?" And they look back at you and say, "I thought you were talking about BIRDS and BEES"! :)

Keep talking and you'll be just fine. Good for you for being a proactive mom and for not letting the world raise your babies.
